A cancer misdiagnosis is not as common as one may think. A cancer misdiagnosis occurs when a Pathologist analyzes a patient’s tissue and incorrectly diagnoses the patient with cancer.
According to a group of researchers at John Hopkins Hospital that reviewed tissue samples from 6,000 cancer patients across the country, “one out of every 71 cases was misdiagnosed; for example, a biopsy was labeled cancerous when it was not. And, up to one out of five cancer cases was misclassified.”Although mistakes can occur on any biopsy, researchers have found misdiagnosis’ commonly occur on tissue from the skin, prostate, breast, and female reproductive system.
Another common issue that can be detrimental to a patient is a delayed diagnosis. Delayed diagnosis errors are common in cancer, specifically lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. Many delayed diagnoses typically occur because of doctors’ neglect to get a biopsy after an abnormal test result.
