With the end of summer, and the start of a new school year sneaking up, it is important to educate both you and your children on important school bus safety. School bus-related accidents are very common and typically occur when kids are boarding or leaving the bus. Whether you are a driver or a parent of a child who rides the bus, you play a role in ensuring the safety of your kids getting to and from school.
Drivers:
- Slow Down. Be aware of children walking or bicycling, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood.
- Be Alert. Children may be playing, gathering, or in the streets near bus stops.
- Obey the Signals. Maryland Law has an “alternately flashing warning light” system in place.
- Yellow flashing lights: the bus is preparing to load or unload children. Vehicles should slow down and prepare to stop.
- Red flashing lights/extended stop arms: the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off the bus. Vehicles from both directions must stop and wait until the red lights stop flashing to proceed.
Parents of Bus Riders:
- Plan to bring children to the bus stop early.
- Assist children with standing away from the curb, as the bus approaches and teach them to wait to board until the bus has completely stopped.
- When getting off the bus, instruct children to look both ways, to make sure traffic has stopped and help them to be aware of passing cars.
- Remember, there is no rush getting on or off the bus!
It is the responsibility of both drivers and parents to keep children safe on and around the school bus. While safety is important, we know that not all accidents can be avoided. If you or a loved one has suffered a school bus-related injury, call Potter Law, LLC today.
